Master the Lyre: A Complete Guide to “The Gift of Song” in Hades
Supergiant Games’ critically acclaimed rogue-like Hades is packed with high-octane combat, fast-paced action, and an incredible cast of mythological characters. However, some of the most rewarding progression in the game happens back at the House of Hades between runs.
Among the many Fated List prophecies you can undertake, “The Gift of Song” stands out as one of the most charming—and notoriously time-consuming—side quests. If you want to help Zagreus transform from an embarrassingly tone-deaf plucker into a musical virtuoso, here is everything you need to know.
Prerequisites: Setting the Stage
Before you can tackle “The Gift of Song,” you need to lay a bit of groundwork in the Underworld:
- Free Orpheus: First, you must unlock and complete the minor prophecy “The Reluctant Musician”. Purchase the Court Musician’s Sentence from the House Contractor for 1 Diamond to bring Orpheus back to his post in the lounge.
- Build Bonds: Talk regularly with Orpheus and reunite him with Eurydice to get the music flowing through the House again.
- Purchase the Lyre: Head to the House Contractor and buy the Lyre for your bedchambers (also costs 1 Diamond).
Once the Lyre is sitting in Zagreus’s room, interacting with it for the first time will officially trigger “The Gift of Song” prophecy from the Fated List of Minor Minor Prophecies.
How to Complete “The Gift of Song”
At the start, when Zagreus plays the instrument, it sounds genuinely awful—out of tune, clunky, and painful to listen to. To master the Lyre, you have to practice.
Completing the prophecy requires a specific number of interactions, gated by dialogue checkpoints with Orpheus:
- Total Interactions Needed: You must interact with the Lyre a total of 210 times.
- Dialogue Checkpoints: You cannot simply spam the button 210 times in a single sitting. Progress is locked behind conversational milestones with Orpheus. You need to play the Lyre, escape or die on a run, and then check in with Orpheus when he has an exclamation point (
!) over his head. - The Milestones: Checkpoints happen at roughly 10, 60, 110, and 210 total interactions. Zagreus’s internal dialogue and the sound of the instrument will gradually improve from jarring plinks to a genuinely melodic tune.
The Reward
Once you finally hit the 210-interaction mark and receive Orpheus’s ultimate validation—where he acknowledges that Zagreus has truly mastered the instrument—return to the Fated List of Minor Prophecies in your bedchambers.
