The Making of a Star: Inside Song Kang’s Early Life and Childhood

Before he was crowned the “Son of Netflix” and captured global hearts in hits like Sweet Home, Navillera, and Nevertheless, Song Kang was just a quiet, imaginative boy growing up in Suwon, South Korea.

While millions now know him for his striking visuals and magnetic on-screen presence, his upbringing was grounded in an artistic, athletic, and surprisingly regular household.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up alongside a younger brother (born in 1998) in a family that naturally balanced physical discipline with creative expression.

  • The Gymnast Father: Athleticism is practically in Song Kang’s DNA. His father was a professional artistic gymnast, instilling a deep appreciation for physical fitness, body awareness, and hard work early on. (Fun fact: athleticism runs even deeper in the family, as his grandfather was a wrestler!).
  • The Piano-Teacher Mother: Balancing his father’s sports background, Song Kang’s mother worked as a piano teacher. This musical environment exposed him to the arts from a young age, helping shape the quiet, sensitive introspection that he later channels into his complex acting roles.

A Boy with Big Blueprints (Literally!)

Long before he ever considered stepping in front of a camera, Song Kang had entirely different career aspirations. Growing up, he was captivated by striking structural designs and aesthetics.

In interviews, he has shared that after looking at “cool pictures” of buildings and interior spaces, his childhood dream was to become an architect or a furniture designer. However, his youthful ambitions hit a humorous roadblock: as he grew older, he realized he had “no idea where [he] needed to start” to break into those industries, leading him to eventually let go of the blueprint dreams.

School Days and Shyness

Despite possessing the kind of effortless visuals that scouts dream of, Song Kang wasn’t an outgoing showman during his school years at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School.

He has often described himself as a relatively shy and ordinary student. In high school, like many teenagers, he experienced the universal pangs of adolescent crushes—once admitting to a crush that lasted two or three months, though he was far too nervous to ever confess his feelings back then.

Turning Down the Idol Track

As he transitioned into young adulthood, Song Kang’s height (reaching 186 cm or 6’1″) and striking features caught the attention of the entertainment industry.

Before making his formal acting debut, he was recruited multiple times by K-pop idol agencies. In an era where many trainees jump at the chance to debut in music groups, Song Kang politely turned them down. His heart was set entirely on acting. Inspired deeply by Leonardo DiCaprio’s powerful emotional range in films, Song Kang chose to pursue a rigorous path, eventually enrolling in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University (the same alma mater as BTS star Jin).

From Quiet Kid to Global Icon

Looking back at his childhood, the traits that define Song Kang today—his disciplined workout habits inherited from his gymnast father, his appreciation for quiet hobbies like reading mystery novels, and his deep sensitivity—were all forged during his early years in Suwon.
