How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify in Minutes

Depending on what you mean by “adding your own music,” there are two completely different ways to do this on Spotify.

Are you looking to listen to personal MP3s, rare mixtapes, or unreleased tracks that only you can hear on your app? Or are you an artist wanting to release your original music to the global Spotify catalog for everyone to stream?

Both paths are broken down step-by-step below.

Path A: How to Listen to Your Own Local Files (For Personal Listening)

If you already have audio files (like MP3s, MP4s, or M4Ps) sitting on your computer or phone and want them inside your Spotify library, you can use the Local Files feature.

Step 1: Turn on Local Files on your Desktop App

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app on your Windows or Mac PC.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the section labeled Your Library and toggle on Show Local Files.
  4. Click Add a Source to select the folder on your computer where your music is stored (like your Downloads or Music folder).

Step 2: Create a Playlist and Sync to Mobile (Optional)

Your music will now appear in a new playlist in your library called Local Files. To listen to these tracks on your phone:

  1. Create a normal playlist on your computer and add your local songs into it.
  2. Connect both your computer and your smartphone to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open Spotify on your phone, navigate to that playlist, and tap the Download button to sync the tracks directly to your mobile device.
(Note for iOS users: You can also enable local audio files directly under Settings & Privacy > Apps and Devices on your iPhone.)

Path B: How to Upload Your Music as an Artist (For Global Streaming)

If you are a musician or producer looking to get your tracks officially on Spotify so fans worldwide can stream them, Spotify does not accept direct uploads. You must use a digital music distributor.

Step 1: Choose a Music Distributor

Distributors act as the bridge between your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and streaming platforms. Popular options include:

  • DistroKid / TuneCore: Pay an annual flat fee for unlimited uploads while keeping 100% of your royalties.
  • CD Baby: Pay a one-time fee per release, though they take a small commission percentage on your earnings.

Step 2: Prepare Your Assets

Before uploading, make sure you have:

  • The Master Audio File: High-quality uncompressed audio—ideally a WAV file (16-bit or 24-bit, 44.1 kHz or higher).
  • Cover Artwork: A square image, exactly 3000 x 3000 pixels (JPG or PNG), free of unauthorized copyrighted material, URLs, or social media handles.
  • Metadata: Accurate track titles, songwriter info, and artist credits.

Step 3: Upload and Schedule

  1. Log into your distributor’s dashboard and click to create a new release.
  2. Upload your audio, artwork, and fill out the song details.
  3. Plan ahead: Choose a release date at least 2 to 3 weeks in the future. This crucial window gives you time to pitch your song for editorial playlists.

Step 4: Claim Your Profile

Once your distributor processes your music, head over to artists.spotify.com to claim your official Spotify for Artists profile. Claiming your profile lets you customize your artist photo, write your bio, view real-time streaming analytics, and pitch your unreleased tracks directly to Spotify’s playlist editors.
