Celebrating the Milestones of Love: What Is a Wedding Anniversary?
A wedding anniversary is far more than just a date on the calendar. It is a quiet checkpoint in the rush of life—a designated moment to pause, look back at the journey so far, and honor the enduring commitment between two people. But beyond the annual dinner reservations or the exchange of cards, what does a wedding anniversary truly represent?
The Origin and Meaning of the Tradition
The word “anniversary” comes from the Latin anniversarius, meaning “returning yearly.” Historically, anniversaries were not always romantic celebrations; ancient cultures often commemorated significant political events, coronations, or religious milestones.
However, celebrating the anniversary of a marriage specifically took root as a way to mark the survival and health of a lifelong bond. In medieval Germany, for example, if a married couple reached their 25th anniversary, the wife was presented with a silver wreath by friends and neighbors. If they reached the 50th, a gold wreath followed.
