The Story Behind “Instant Crush”: When Did Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas’ Masterpiece Drop?
For fans of electronic music and indie rock alike, the collaboration between French house legends Daft Punk and The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas feels like a fever dream that actually came true.
“Instant Crush” stands as one of the emotional centerpieces of Daft Punk’s critically acclaimed final album, Random Access Memories. But exactly when did this iconic track make its way into the world?
The Release Timeline
The journey of “Instant Crush” from studio concept to global hit spans the spring and autumn of 2013:
- May 17, 2013: The song made its official debut as the fourth track on the album Random Access Memories, released worldwide by Columbia Records.
- November 22, 2013: Following the massive global success of the album’s lead single “Get Lucky,” “Instant Crush” was officially released to radio stations as the album’s fourth official single.
- December 5, 2013: The cinematic, heartbreaking music video featuring wax figures of Casablancas and a tragic female soldier dropped on Vevo/YouTube, cementing the song’s visual legacy.
How the Collaboration Happened
The track’s creation is almost as fascinating as its sound. In 2010, Daft Punk (Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter) were working on the score for TRON: Legacy. While in New York, they crossed paths with Julian Casablancas.
Mutual fans of each other’s work, Daft Punk played Casablancas an early instrumental demo. Inspired on the spot, Casablancas picked up a microphone, improvised the distinctive vocal melodies and lyrics through heavy vocoder and pitch-correction effects, and laid down the vocal track that would define the song.
“It was amazing to see how fast it all came together. He heard the track, and suddenly this melancholic, romantic story just poured out of him.” — Thomas Bangalter
Why the Song Endures
More than a decade after its 2013 release, “Instant Crush” has achieved cult-classic status. Blending 1980s synth-pop nostalgia, melancholic lyrics about unrequited love, and warm, organic instrumentation, it captured a unique emotional vulnerability that proved electronic music could be deeply heartbroken.
