The Rise of a Global Star: The Complete Story of Song Kang
Song Kang (송강) has taken the Hallyu wave by storm, capturing the hearts of millions around the globe. Often dubbed the “Son of Netflix” due to his heavy presence on the streaming giant, this charismatic South Korean actor went from a fresh-faced rookie to one of the most recognizable leading men in the entertainment industry.
Early Life and Finding His Path
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up with a creative background; his father was an artistic gymnast and his mother was a piano teacher. Despite receiving several offers to become a K-pop idol trainee early on, Song Kang turned them down because his heart was set entirely on acting.
He pursued this passion by majoring in Film Arts at Konkuk University, laying the foundational training that would soon launch his professional career.
Breaking Into Acting and Early Roles
Song Kang made his official acting debut in 2017 with a supporting role in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover, followed by a family drama appearance in Man in the Kitchen.
Eager to showcase his versatility, he also stepped into the variety show spotlight. In 2018, he served as a fixed host for the popular music program Inkigayo alongside SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu and DIA’s Chaeyeon, and joined the cast of the mystery variety show Village Survival, the Eight. These early television appearances earned him widespread public affection and a nomination for a Rookie Award.
The “Son of Netflix” Era and Global Stardom
Song’s career trajectory shifted dramatically when he beat out 900 other candidates to land his first major lead role:
- Love Alarm (2019–2021): Playing Hwang Sun-oh in this hit webtoon-adapted romance series skyrocketed Song Kang to international fame.
- Sweet Home (2020–2024): Proving he could handle intense action and dark fantasy, he took on the lead role of Cha Hyun-su in Netflix’s blockbuster creature-feature series Sweet Home. The show became a massive global hit, earning him critical acclaim and a Best New Actor nomination at the Baeksang Arts Awards.
- Navillera & Nevertheless (2021): In 2021, Song displayed incredible range. He spent six months learning rigorous ballet training to portray a gifted ballet dancer in the touching slice-of-life drama Navillera, right before pivoting into the complex romance-thriller Nevertheless.
- Forecasting Love and Weather (2022) & My Demon (2023): He continued his streak of hit romantic dramas, starring alongside Park Min-young in Forecasting Love and Weather and later playing a supernatural, charming deity opposite Kim Yoo-jung in the fantasy romance My Demon, which swept multiple accolades at the SBS Drama Awards.
Military Service and Continuing Journey
Like all able-bodied South Korean men, Song Kang fulfilled his mandatory military service. He enlisted as an active-duty soldier on April 2, 2024, leaving fans with pre-filmed projects like Sweet Home Season 3 to enjoy while he served. Following his successful discharge in October 2025, he immediately stepped back into his acting career with upcoming projects lined up, such as Four Hands.
Beyond acting, Song Kang’s striking visuals and global influence have made him a darling of the fashion world, serving as a brand ambassador for luxury houses like Prada as well as international cosmetic brands.
Fun Fact: Despite being allergic to dogs, pollen, and peaches, Song Kang is famously an animal lover who still enjoys spending his free time driving, playing the piano, and gaming.
With his dedication to transforming into every character he plays—whether a monster fighter, a ballet prodigy, or a supernatural demon—Song Kang remains one of South Korea’s most dynamic and beloved modern icons.
